Introduction

In 2016, The Little Big Project began its journey of inclusive community transformation, partnering with Saint Rest Community Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), an extension of Saint Rest Baptist Church in Fresno, CA. This collaboration focused on addressing the severe social, environmental, and health challenges in southwest Fresno, an area predominantly occupied by Black and Latino residents, marked by high poverty, environmental hazards, and limited access to safe, open spaces. Together, we aimed to create a sustainable and welcoming environment that could enhance quality of life and foster community bonds.

Project Background

For over 40 years, Saint Rest Baptist Church held nearly two acres of vacant land within southwest Fresno. This neglected area was surrounded by brownfields, high pollution levels, and a stark absence of green spaces. The community experienced alarming health disparities, with a life expectancy nearly two decades shorter than other Fresno neighborhoods. With guidance from The Little Big Project, Saint Rest CEDC committed to transforming this land into a community park and youth facility—an initiative that would not only reduce blight but also provide a safe, welcoming space for residents to gather, exercise, and build positive connections.

The Little Big Project’s Role

Empowering Community Ownership:
From the outset, The Little Big Project prioritized community involvement. Through listening sessions and community meetings, we ensured that residents’ voices were at the forefront of design and development. This approach instilled a sense of ownership, laying the groundwork for long-term success and stewardship of the park.

Strategic Partnership Building:
Recognizing the need for local support, we built strategic partnerships with key institutions to secure resources and build momentum. Our efforts led to over $400,000 in funding for the first phase of park development and an additional $600,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address brownfields in the surrounding neighborhood.

Environmental and Health Advocacy:
The park’s creation brought much-needed green space to southwest Fresno, encouraging physical activity and improving environmental health outcomes. This effort was more than a beautification project; it directly addressed local health disparities and environmental justice.

Outcomes and Community Impact

Revitalized Community Space:
Today, the park stands as a vibrant community hub featuring a playground, benches, and a soccer field. It has transformed from a once-vacant, overlooked plot into a lively, active space where families and neighbors gather, children play, and the community thrives.

Increased Community Cohesion:
The park has become a catalyst for strengthening community bonds, fostering a shared sense of pride and belonging among residents. It serves as a venue for celebrations, community events, and everyday recreation, reinforcing local connections.

Long-term Vision and Sustainable Impact:
This successful project has paved the way for future developments, including plans for a youth facility and mixed-use housing, as well as other sustainable community initiatives. The park’s impact will continue to unfold, contributing to a healthier and more inclusive community.

Key Insights

Empowerment Through Involvement:
Involving residents in each phase cultivated pride and ownership, essential for the park’s sustained success.

Collaboration as a Cornerstone:
Strategic partnerships with local organizations and national agencies were instrumental, providing the support needed for transformative results.

Promoting Health and Well-being:
This green space is not just a park; it represents improved health and quality of life for a historically underserved community, providing a model for sustainable urban development.
